Joseph Randolph Rhude

September 28, 1924 — January 5, 2009

Joseph Randolph Rhude, 84, of Elkhart, died early Monday morning, January 5, 2008, at Woodland Manor and Rehabilitation Center after an extended illness. He was born in Goshen on September 28, 1924, to H.V. and Ruth (Miller) Rhude.  He married Gwendolyn Loraine Grover in Goshen on July 29, 1945.  She died March 19, 1992. A self-employed carpenter, Mr. Rhude was a lifelong resident of the Goshen area.  He also worked and retired from Schult Homes in Middlebury.  Mr. Rhude served in the US Navy during World War II in Guadalcanal. He is survived by three sons, Doug (Carolee) Rhude of Elkhart, Ted Rhude of Salem, Arkansas, and Jay Scott Rhude of Venice, Florida; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Jackie (Jim) Myers of Goshen; and a brother, Larry (Judy) Rhude of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He was preceded in death by his wife; two brothers, Howie and Donnie Rhude; and a sister, Rosalie Howard. Friends may call 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, January 7, 2009, at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home. A graveside service with military honors will be held at a later date in Violett Cemetery, Goshen. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Elkhart County or the VFW.
