John Thomas "Tom" Schrock, of Goshen, died peacefully in his home on June 23, 2021 from complications related to primary sclerosing cholangitis. He had been in failing health for a short period.
He was preceded in death by his parents, N. Wilmer and Pauline (Liechty) Schrock and a sister, Margaret Schrock.
He is survived by his wife Ruth; sons, Jonathan (Mandy Yoder), Goshen and Matthew, Sacramento, California; two grandchildren, Noah and Anna; brothers, Timothy, Goshen, David (Melissa), Orrville, Ohio and a sister, Joanna (Duane) Swartley, Harrisonburg, Virginia.
Tom was born in Wooster, Ohio on November 14, 1948 and graduated from Smithville High School, Smithville, Ohio in 1967.
He graduated from Goshen College in 1971 and holds a master’s degree in education from Indiana University.
Tom married Ruth Slabaugh in 1971. They were able to celebrate their 50 th wedding anniversary on May 22, 2021. They lived in Nappanee for most of their marriage before moving to Goshen.
Tom was an active member of Yellow Creek Mennonite Church for many years and more recently was a member of Belmont Mennonite Church.
Tom first taught in Newfoundland, Canada with Mennonite Central Committee. He then taught eighth grade science at Nappanee Middle School and NorthWood Middle School until his retirement in 2016.
Tom liked traveling and with Ruth was able to visit all fifty states and numerous countries in Europe. He also enjoyed time spent with his family. He had a quiet sense of humor and loved to tell “Dad” jokes. After retiring he always looked forward to his Wednesday morning breakfast group.
Yoder-Culp Funeral Home is handling arrangements. There will be visitation at Belmont Mennonite Church on June 25, 2021 from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. A memorial service will be held at Belmont on June 26, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. Please wear masks if unvaccinated or if you feel unsafe in indoor group settings.
