John I. Oberly, 94, of Goshen, died early Friday morning, October 15, 2010, at Greencroft Healthcare where he had been since October 6. He was born September 4, 1916, in Lakeville, to the late Charles W. and Ethel P. (Bassett) Oberly.  He married Arlene M. Mamerow on November 24, 1938 in Twelve Mile.  She died March 12, 2004. He is survived by a son, Charles (Barbara) Oberly of Palatine, Illinois; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Norma. He was preceded in death by a son, Jerry Oberly; and two brothers, Cleo and Ray Oberly. A member and former deacon of First Brethren Church, New Paris, Mr. Oberly and his two brothers were former owners and operators of Wyatt Lumber Co. and Bremen Lumber Co. Mr. Oberly graduated from Madison Twp. High School.  Before moving to Greencroft in 1990, he was a former member and deacon of North Liberty First Brethren Church.  He was a 50 year member and Past master of Bremen Lodge, #414, F. & A.M., Nappanee Chapter #155, R.A.M., Valley South Bend Scottish Rite; and a former charter member of the Madison Twp. Lion’s Club. Friends may call 9 to 11 a.m., Monday, October 18, 2010, at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home where an 11:00 a.m. funeral service will be conducted by Pastor Ted Schowengerdt of the New Paris First Brethren Church. Burial will follow in Violett Cemetery, Goshen. Memorial contributions may be given to First Brethren Church or Greencroft.
