John I. Knapp

John I. Knapp, 85, of Syracuse, died Tuesday, November 22, 2016, at The Maples at Waterford Crossing.

John, the son of Bill and Laura (Klonowski) Knapp was born, grew up and attended public schools in Goshen.

John served four years as a radioman in the U. S. Navy during the Korean Crisis, most of those years at sea on ships based out of San Diego.  After his honorable discharge from the Navy he earned bachelor of arts and master of arts degrees from Ball State University and taught in the Elkhart Community Schools for 30 years.  When John and Betty retired from teaching in 1990 they moved from Elkhart to their family home on Lake Wawasee.

He was an Indiana Retired Teacher, a member of the American Legion, a founding member of the Osolo Lions Club, an active member of the Italian American Relief Association (IARA) and a supporter of the Wawasee Area Conservancy Foundation.  He enjoyed golfing, hunting and fishing, following Indiana basketball and was a Notre Dame football ticket holder for over 50 years.

He is survived by Betty, his wife of 63 years; sons, Robert C. (Dana) Knapp and John F. Knapp; grandchildren, Joe Knapp, Christa Knapp and Iyla Knapp; and a sister, Joan (Herb) Ulery.

John was preceded in death by his oldest son, William.

People who knew John know that his spirit is free now to do what he loved best, to roam the green fields and woods of Indiana with his dog Sheba.

In keeping with John’s wishes, a private family service will be held at a later date at Violett Cemetery, Goshen.
