John Samuel Horning, M.D., 82, of Goshen, died Wednesday afternoon, December 26, 2007, at Goshen General Hospital where he had been a patient since December 18. He was born in China on December 9, 1925, to Daniel and Martha (Daggett) Horning. He married Estella Ruth Boggs on August 25, 1951 in Chicago, Illinois. She survives. A Goshen resident since June 2001, Dr. Horning was a medical family doctor and had been at the Wheaton medical Clinic in Wheaton, Illinois for 23 years, retiring in 1990. He graduated from Marshall High School in Chicago in 1943, Manchester College in 1949 and Chicago Medical School in 1953. He served as a missionary for 15 years, 1956 to 1971, in Ecuador and four years in Nigeria, 1973 to 1976. He was a member of Goshen City Church of the Brethren and enjoyed photography. He is survived by his wife, Estella; four daughters, Ann (David) Blind of Carmel, Indiana, Judith (William Sailor) Horning of Santa Fe, New Mexico, Kathleen (Isa) Maloul of Skokie, Illinois, and Carolyn (Michael) Neher of Lombard, Illinois; one son, James (Laura) Horning of Goshen; 13 grandchildren; a great-grandson; a sister, Lois (Graydon) Snyder of Chicago, Illinois; a brother, James (Audra) Horning of Farmington, Pennsylvania; and a brother-in-law, Kenneth Frantz of North Manchester, Indiana. He was preceded in death by a sister, Miriam Frantz. A 4:00 p.m., Saturday, January 12, 2008 memorial service will be held at the York Center Church of the Brethren in Lombard, Illinois, with Pastor Christy Waldersdorff. A 4:00 p.m., Saturday, January 19, 2008, memorial service will be held at Goshen City Church of the Brethren with Pastors Roy Stern and Carol Waggy officiating.
