Joan H. O’Neill, 95, of Indianapolis formerly of Lakeville, passed away Friday, July 25, 2025 at Westside Garden Plaza.
She was born January 25, 1930 in Dunlap to Wayne and Georgianna Fay Huffman.
She attended Chamberlain Elementary, Goshen Junior High and Goshen High School, graduating in 1948. After high school, she worked at the Goshen Telephone Company as a night switch operator until her marriage.
On November 11, 1951 she married Verde O’Neill in Goshen. He died December 3, 2020.
She was active in the First Presbyterian Church of Goshen, serving as a local representative of the Wabash Presbytery in the Presbyterian Women USA organization. After moving to Lakeville, Indiana, she served as a Deacon at Sunnyside Presbyterian Church and served on several board administrations.
She is survived by a daughter, Marta O’Neill of Maryland Heights, Missouri; Mary O’Neill, daughter-in-law, seven grandchildren, Christine, Derek, Jason, Paula, Hannah, Jessica and Sandra; and nine great-grandchildren.
Along with her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Lisa O’Neill; a son, Michael O’Neill; a grandson, David Michael O'Neill, and a brother, John Huffman.
Mrs. O’Neill was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was an ardent sewer, creating wardrobes for her family and crafting baby layettes for church missions around the world. She also loved cooking, bird watching and was an avid gardener and loved being outdoors. She was a golfer and belonged to a women's golfing league in the South Bend area."
Joan was also an avid Purdue and Notre Dame football and basketball enthusiast, having had season tickets for many years.
Services will be held at Sunnyside Presbyterian Church, 115 South Frances Street, South Bend, Indiana 46617 on Saturday, October 11, 2025, at 11 a.m. followed by a light luncheon at the church. Burial of her cremated remains will take place in Violett Cemetery, Goshen, following the luncheon, at 2:30 p.m.
