Surrounded by family, Jesse S. Kehr Jr., 88 peacefully passed away on Wednesday, July 3, 2024 at his home in Hesston, Kansas.
Born in 1936, Jesse grew up in Harrison Twp, Elkhart County, Indiana. He attended Morningstar School and graduated from Wakarusa High School. He loved his family, fishing, softball, deer hunting, and relaxing with his autoharp. He completed his professional life as an estimator and salesman for Sherriff Goslin Roofing, South Bend. Often reserved at first meeting, he charmed many with his humor, smile, and compassion.
Jesse met Genevive Irene Miller in the summer of 1955 at a Voluntary Service unit teaching Bible School in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. On October 7, 1956 Jesse and Genie were married at Emma Mennonite Church, with Amos Hostetler officiating. To this union were born three sons – Bob, Bryan, and Ronnie.
Jesse is survived by his sons, Robert S. (Robin) of Sutter Creek, California, and Bryan L. (Anita) of North Newton, Kansas; his sisters Ruth (Robert) Liechty of Leo, Indiana and Margaret (Don) Porzelius, of Eureka, Illinois; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife, Genie Kehr; his son, Ronald L.; his mother, Winnie (Singer) Kehr; his father, Jesse S. Kehr Sr.; his brothers Orville Kehr and R. Stanley Kehr; and four sisters – Helen Liechty, Miriam Hooley, Caroline Kehr, and Marianna Brubaker.
Services for Jesse will be held on August 25, 2024 at Berkey Avenue Mennonite Fellowship, 2509 Berkey Ave, Goshen, IN 46526. Visitation is at 2:30pm, funeral services at 3:30pm, followed by a light meal and sharing of memories. A private burial service will be at Yellow Creek Cemetery.
