Jeannette J. Schmidt, 87, of South Bend, died Friday evening, September 19, 2014, at Morning View Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, South Bend. She was born March 11, 1927 in Cordell, Oklahoma, to Peter D. and Joycie (Schultz) Wiens. On September 14, 1946 in Bessie, Oklahoma, she married Paul Schmidt. He died November 24, 1997 in Newton, Kansas. Surviving are two sons; Vyron (Elvina) Schmidt, of Goshen and Dennis G. (Dianne) Schmidt, of Pandora, Ohio; six grandchildren, Matthew (Lisa) Schmidt, Andrea Schmidt, Stephanie (Aaron) Wieand, Ryan Schmidt, Philip (Mary) Schmidt, and Julia Schmidt; and five great-grandchildren, Carter, Colette, Adelyn, Micah and Ethan. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and a sister, Vivian Baergen. Jeannette was a 1945 graduate of Cordell High School, a former member of the Newton Extension Homemakers Club, and Church Women United. She taught youth Sunday school classes for many years as a member of the First Mennonite Church of Newton, KS, and was currently a member of the Waterford Mennonite Church, Goshen. She retired as an administrative assistant for Women in Mission of the General Conference Mennonite Church, in Newton, after 30 years of service Her body will be cremated and a memorial service will be held Monday, December 22, 2014, at 11 a.m. at Waterford Mennonite Church, 65975 S.R. 15, Goshen. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Burial will be at Restlawn Memorial Gardens West, Newton, Kansas. Memorials may be made to Africa Inter-Mennonite Mission for the Hope for Congo Bible Project.
