Jay A. Winther, 71, of Granger, died at his home Friday evening, June 27, 2014, after a two year illness. He was born Jan. 12, 1943 in Springville, Utah to Einer Fredric and Pearl Jospehine (Humphrey) Winther. On June 30, 1967 he married Yvette Kay Mock in Elkhart. She survives along with four sons, Marvin Ray (Janet) Miller, Bristol, Jason Fredrick (Joy) Winther, Osceola, Cary Hansen (Jami) Winther, Burr Oak, Mich., and Dustin Aric Allan (Heather) Winther, Granger; 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Rosalie Winther, a brother, James Fuller and infant brother, Jay Winther. A lifelong area resident and local mechanic, Jay was a 1961 graduate of Mishawaka High School and member of the #449 Moose Lodge, Buchanan, Mich. Jay was an avid musician who enjoyed playing the organ and bass guitar. He loved all music and singing, he loved to entertain people. He also was an avid fisherman who ran a fishing charter on Lake Michigan for many years. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Wed. July 2, 2014, at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home where a 1 p.m. funeral service will be held. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger. Memorial contributions may be directed to Bashor Children's Home.
