Jane Naus Mayse, 88, of Goshen, died early Thursday morning, January 4, 2007, at Greencroft Healthcare. She was born in South Bend, Indiana, on June 23, 1918, to Dr. James H. and Lydia (Mills) Naus. On October 20, 1943, she married William Henley Mayse. He died March 17, 1997. A 1940 graduate of DePauw University, Mrs. Mayse taught at Parkside and Waterford Elementary Schools in Goshen for 15 years before retiring in 1980. She received her master’s degree from Indiana University in 1972. A member of the First United Methodist Church, Goshen, she was a member of the Beta Rho Chapter of the Psi Iota XI and served as president in 1950-51. She also served as a board and council member of Campfire and in 1965 received the Luther Halsey Gulick Award. Mrs. Mayse helped establish the Goshen Adult Literacy Program and was active in the local Republican Women and Friends of the Goshen Public Library. In 1992 she was honored by the Exchange Club with the Book of Golden Deeds. Mrs. Mayse is survived by two daughters, Carol Ann (David) Rhudy of Goshen and Barbara Lee (Dr. John) MacDougall of Indianapolis; a son, Dr. William Clark Mayse of Reston, Virginia; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and a brother, Dr. James H. Naus, Jr. Friends will be received 4 to 7 p.m., Friday, January 5 at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the First Presbyterian Church, Goshen. A 1:30 p.m., Saturday, January 6, 2007, funeral service will be conducted at the First Presbyterian Church. Pamela Kling, Pastoral Assistant at the First United Methodist Church, Goshen will officiate. Burial will be in Violett Cemetery, Goshen. Memorial contributions may be made to the Goshen Adult Literacy Program.
