James P. Slagle, 89, of Goshen, died Sunday morning, October 21, 2012,at Elkhart General Hospital after recently being admitted. He was born January 6, 1923, in Nappanee, to Roy G. and Merle (Strauss) Slagle. On May 14, 1950, he married Beverly R. Vinke, in Bremen. She survives. Also surviving are his children; a daughter, Linda (Craig) Chupp of Goshen; three sons, Lloyd (Karen) Slagle and Terry (Betty) Slagle, both of Nappanee, and Paul (Donna) Slagle of Dayton, Ohio; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Roy (Ruby) Slagle of Milford, and Eugene (Norma) Slagle of Wakarusa. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Marilyn Nichols. A 1941 graduate of Montpelier High School, Ohio, he served in the U.S. Army during WWII in the European Theater. He worked as a postal worker for 30 years in the Nappanee area; was a member of the American Legion, Evergreen Singers, and a long time volunteer at Greencroft being named "Real Services Age of Excellence Volunteer for the year 2012". Friends may call 2 to 4, and 6 - 8 p.m., Tuesday, October 23, 2012 at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home, and one hour prior to the 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 24, funeral service led by Pastor Gene Hollingsworth, of First English Lutheran Church.
