James A. Groff, 77, of Goshen, died early Saturday morning, January 5, 2008, at Goshen General Hospital from complications with cancer. He was born in Millersburg, Indiana, on September 22, 1930 to Albert P.H. and Lois B. (Chrisman) Groff.  He married Onole L. Burtsfield on September 13, 1953, in the New Paris United Methodist Church.  She survives. He was a 1948 graduate of Millersburg High School and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict where he was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.  He was a member of the Millersburg American Legion and Lions Club.  He served on the Fairfield School Board and refereed boys’ high school basketball games. He was a member of the Zion Community Church where he taught Sunday School and served as Sunday School Superintendant and Elder. He had a lifelong love for agriculture.  He was devoted to his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Teresa O. (Blair “Andy”) Rieth of Zionsville; a son, Michael J. (Rose) Groff of Shipshewana; five grandchildren, Jared, Joel and Jessica Herschberger, and Allison and Sarah Rieth; a brother, Richard (Nancy) Groff of Millersburg; and a sister, Margaret (Harry) Prough of Goshen. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Hellen Willard in 1979 and Julia Ann Perrin in 2002. Friends may call 2 to 5 and 6 to 8 p.m., Monday, January 7, at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. A 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, January 8, 2008, funeral service will be conducted at the Zion Community Church, 323 E. Lincoln in Millersburg.  Pastor Bob Doane will officiate. Burial will be in Brown Cemetery, Millersburg. Memorial contributions may be made to Zion Community Church or Goshen General Hospital Care at Home Hospice or Goshen Cancer Center.
