James R. Burkholder

James Rex Burkholder passed away August 30 at his home; due to complications related to a disabling accident in 1995. He was born January 3, 1941, at Goshen City Hospital, the son of Clayton and Mildred Burkholder. Jim attended West Goshen Elementary, Dell and Kurtz schools. In 1959 he graduated from Wakarusa High School.

On November 2, 1963, he married Jeraldine (Jeri) Hoffman at Eighth Street Mennonite Church. Following their marriage, Jim served for two years at the Fort Wayne Children’s Home, a juvenile detention facility for troubled youth. After returning to Goshen, he was employed in construction. Nevertheless, Jim’s lifelong interest in livestock farming persisted, specializing in handling sheep and an unwavering fascination with bison.

Jim got great joy from building his family’s country home. He looked forward to family vacations in state and national parks. A highlight of his life was spending time with his grandchildren.

Jim is survived by his wife Jeri, his son Tyler, his grandchildren Sydney Burkholder Nason, Marah, Bailey and Brody Burkholder, a great grandson Ivan Nason, and two brothers, Robert and Milton Burkholder. He was preceded in death by his parents and his son Slade in 2006.

Jim was a long-time member of North Goshen Mennonite Church. He assumed various responsibilities as a member, but he most enjoyed his work sponsoring the youth groups.

A celebration of Jim’s life will be held Saturday, November 26, 2022, starting at 11 a.m. at North Goshen Mennonite Church.
