James Curtis Barber

James Curtis Barber, 76, of Goshen, died Tuesday, January 29, 2013, at Elkhart General Hospital. He was born March 9, 1936 in San Francisco, California, to James Frank and Eunice (Otwell) Barber, Jr. He married Sandra Vander Werf, June 23, 1979 in Goshen. She survives. Also surviving are two children, Lynn Barber of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Greg Barber of Sacramento, California; a granddaughter, Ryane (James) Shields; two great-granddaughters, Ashtyn and Camden; his stepmother, Anne B. Barber of Elgin, Oklahoma; four sisters, Patricia (Bud) Bylsma of Beaverton, Oregon, Carolyn Moussa of Citrus Heights, California, Linda Wells of Noble, Oklahoma, and Jamie Porter of Lawton, Oklahoma; and a brother, James F. Barber III of Elgin, Oklahoma. He was preceded in death by his parents. MSG Barber retired from the U.S. Army in 1988 and then from the US Postal Service in 2001. He was a member of River Oaks Community Church, PM Mount Scott Lodge #540,Goshen Masonic Lodge #12, DAV Post #15, American Legion Post #30 and Scottish Rite. Friends may call 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., Monday, February 4, 2013, at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home where a 5:45 p.m. Masonic service will take place. Friends may also call one hour prior to the 10 a.m. funeral service on Tuesday, February 5, 2013, at River Oaks Community Church, 58020 C.R. 115, Goshen. Pastor Scott Tilley will officiate. Burial will follow in Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta, Michigan. Memorial contributions may be given to Wounded Warrior Project.
