J Louis "Louie" Stoffel

J. Louie “Louie” Stoffel, Jr., 84, passed away Monday morning, May 4, 2009, at Greencroft Healthcare Center of Goshen. He was born to John Louis and Katherine Mary (Murphy) Stoffel, Sr. at West Carthage, New York, on August 22, 1924.  He married Vivian Pearl on May 1, 1949, at Eighth Street Mennonite Church of Goshen.  His parents preceded him death while his wife survives. Louis was the co-owner and operator with his wife of the Lincoln Avenue Schwinn in Goshen from 1964 – 1986.  Prior to that, he had worked at Chase Bag, IXL Furniture Co., and Bartow Cartage, all of Goshen.  He was a member of Christian Fellowship of Goshen, former member of the Eight Street Mennonite Church where he had served on various committees, Evening Exchange Club, served on the Book of Golden Deeds and Boy of the Month Committees, and former member of the Sunshine Twirlers square dancers.  He was drafted into the United States Army in 1945 and was a veteran of World War II.  After serving a 20 month tour, he re-enlisted for another 18 months.  He was stationed in northern Italy for 13 months of his active duty.  He was part of the military police in the 88th Infantry Division.  He is survived by his wife; one daughter, Terri (Danny) Jones of Middlebury; one son, Don (Rosilynn) Stoffel of Middlebury; twelve grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; five sisters, Joan (George) Fitch of Lillian, Alabama, Beverly (Mel) Worthington of Lakeland, Florida,  Anne (Donald) Perrin of San Diego, Califorinia, Viola (Leon) Harris of Rush, New York, and Betty (Emmanuel) Abellanosa of Seatlle, Washington; two brothers, John L. (Gloria) Stoffel of Antwerp, New York, and G. Tony (Carol) Stoffel of Lowville, New York; one brother-in-law, Darwin Wallace; and three sister-in-laws, Grace Stoffel, Mary Stoffel, and Anitia Stoffel.  He was preceded in death by five sibilings; Richard G. Stoffel in 1992, Patricia Haughwout in 2008, Rosemary Wallace in 2006, Leo A. Stoffel in 1996, and Charles A. Stoffel in 1999. Friends may call from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Thursday, May 7, 2009, and one hour prior to the service on Friday, May 8, 2009. A 1:00 p.m., Friday, May 8, 2009, funeral service will be conducted at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home with Pastor Craig Garber of Christian Fellowship of Goshen officiating. Burial will be at Little Pine Cemetery of Goshen. Memorial contributions may be made out to Goshen Boys and Girls Club.
