Ira A. Bickel, Jr.

Ira A. Bickel, Jr., 90, of Three Rivers, Michigan, died Wednesday August 29, 2007, at Heartland Healthcare in Three Rivers. He was born January 15, 1917, in Goshen, to Ithe late Ira Bickel, Sr. and Beulah (Schrock) Bickel.  He married Florence (Jones) Rink in December of 1954 in Angola, Indiana.  She died October 15, 2005. Mr. Bickel was a Goshen resident until the 70's and then he moved to White Pigeon.  He was in law enforcement for 60 years serving as Elkhart County Chief Deputy Sheriff and Police Commissioner in White Pigeon, Michigan.  He also worked for the Elkhart County Highway Department. A 1935 graduate of Millersburg High School, he was a member of the FOP, the Eagles, the Moose, the Michigan Sheriff's Association, the AFSCME (American Federal of State, County and Municipal Employees) of AFLCIO, serving as International Vice-President; Millersburg Trustee; National Rifle Association; and New Hope Assembly in Three Rivers, Michigan.  Mr. Bickel was involved in politics and was instrumental in establishing the Elkhart County Highway Employees Retirement Benefits. Friends may call 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, August 31, at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home. A 1:00 p.m., Saturday, September 1, 2007, funeral service will be conducted at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home.  Rev. Steve Miller of New Hope Assembly, Three Rivers, Michigan, will officiate. Burial will be in Eldridge Cemetery, Middlebury. Memorial contributions may be made to New Hope Assembly.
