Howard Dwight Putman, 90, of Goshen and formerly of Millersburg, died Friday morning, April 13, 2012, at Greencroft Healthcare where he had been since July 2011. He was born February 25, 1922, in Elkhart to the late Timothy and Lillian (Crist) Putman. He married Margie V. Berkey October 11, 1942 at the Rock Run Church of the Brethren. She survives along with two daughters, Tina (Greg) Stump and Dana Putman, both of Goshen; a son, Roger (Naline) Putman of Callahan, Florida; six grandchildren, Renee, Brian, Jessica, Brittany, Shawn and Cherie; a great-grandson, Maxwell and a sister, Ruth Miller, Goshen. He was preceded in death by a brother, Clifford Putman and a sister, Lucille Warlick. A lifelong area resident, he graduated from Elkhart High School in 1940. He was a member of the Zion Community Church and a longtime member of Maxwelton Golf Club. A World War II veteran, Mr. Putman served with the Air Force from 1942-45 as a pilot, mechanic, gunner, and bombing school. He was discharged as a 2nd Lieutenant. He was a charter member of the American Legion Post #484, Millersburg, marching with the color guard for about 50 years. For more than 20 years he was devoted to marking local veterans' graves for Memorial Day. Mr. Putman was part owner of Millersburg Hardware, Millersburg Lumber Company and then owner and operator of C&P Oil for 32 years. Friends may call 4 to 8 p.m., Monday, April 16, at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home where a 10 a.m., Tuesday, April 17, 2012, funeral service will be conducted. Pastor Chris Howell of Zion Community Church, Millersburg, will officiate. Burial, with military graveside services conducted by the Millersburg and Goshen Veterans' organizations, will follow in Brown Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Zion Community Church.
