Herman L. Eger

Herman L. Eger, 88, of Goshen, died Sunday evening, November 30, 2008, at Elkhart General Hospital where he had been a patient for a week. He was born in Mishawaka, Indiana, on December 16, 1919, to Loyd and Hazel (McCreary) Eger.  He married Rachel Frances Lynn on September 18, 1948, at the Sugar Grove Church.  She survives. Following his military service, Mr. Eger was a partner with his brother in Eger’s Greenhouses in Osceola.  Later he worked at NIBCO in Elkhart, retiring in 1982 after 29 years. A longtime member of Sugar Grove Church and Friendly Pioneers, Mr. Eger graduated in 1938 from Mishawaka High School.  He served with the US Naval Air Force during World War II in the Bahamas.  Mr. Eger was an avid traveler.  He had camped in national and state parks throughout the US.  He was well known as a very successful mushroom hunter. He is survived by his wife, Rachel; three daughters, Jean (Bob) Wing of Stuart, Florida, and Joan (Devon) Miller and Chris (Jim) Stembel, both of Goshen; a son, Steve Eger of Goshen; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Kermit and Millard Eger. Friends may call 2 to 4 and 5 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, December 3, at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home and 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., Thursday, December 4 at the church. A 10:30 a.m., Thursday, December 4, 2008, funeral service will be conducted at Sugar Grove Church, Goshen.  Pastor rick Gering and Pastor Dale Brock will officiate. Burial will be in Sugar Grove Cemetery, Goshen. Memorial contributions may be made to Richard and Adauta Eger with New Tribes Mission.
