Herbert L. Vaughn

June 16, 1939 — August 9, 2013

Herbert L. Vaughn, 74, of Goshen, died Friday evening, August 9, 2013 at Elkhart General Hospital, after a 10 month illness. He was born June 16, 1939 in Kemper County, Mississippi, to William and Lena Beatrice (Eldridge) Vaughn. On July 8, 1960 he married Elizabeth Moore. She survives along with a daughter, Sylvia (Paul) Sawatsky, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, a son, Kevin (Melissa) Vaughn, of Cincinnati, Ohio; seven grandchildren, Joshua, Caleb, Micah, Matthew, Eliza, Andrea, and Benjamin; five sisters, Margaret Cowsert, Colon, Mich., Peggy Higginbotham, Macon, Miss., Patsy Witt, of Elkhart, Deborah (McCoy) Phillips, of Black Hawk, Mississippi, and Kathy (Jimmy) Bowlin, of Greenwood, Mississippi; and three brothers, William "Pete" (Phyllis) Vaughn, of Bruce, Mississippi, Bobbie (Carolyn) Vaughn, of Millersburg, and Tommy (Diane) Vaughn, of Elkhart. He was preceded in death by a son, Michael on June 29, 1985, and a brother, Claude Fletcher Vaughn. Herb led a very active life. As a young man Herb served in the U.S. Army Reserves. He began his working career locally at Goshen Case, which later became Modular Technologies, working eventually to become Plant Manager. He retired in 2001 as Plant Engineer after 41 years of service to MTS. A very accomplished gardener, Herb continued a long family tradition of nurturing a large vegetable truck patch and flower garden. Family and friends often marveled over the high quality and abundance of vegetables from his garden, which he generously shared with everyone. An avid outdoorsman, Herb enjoyed hunting deer and small game, and freshwater fishing. Raising Redbone coonhounds was a life-long passion. He was very well known among national and international coonhunter circles, the American Coonhunters Assoc. and the United Kennel Club for producing Champion Redbone Coonhounds within their annual competitions. Herb came to love the Lord early in his life; and his strong faith sustained him. He loved his country; church; friends and fellow coonhunting enthusiasts; but most of all, he loved his family. Herb was very proud of all his grandchildren, upon whom he showered his devotion, and especially enjoyed his time fishing with them. Friends may call 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, August 13, 2013 at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home, and one hour prior to the 11 a.m. funeral service Wednesday, August 14, 2013 at First Baptist Church, Goshen. Rev. Louis Showers and Dr. Gregg Lanzen will officiate. Burial will follow at Violett cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to First Baptist Church, Goshen, or Faith Mission, Elkhart.
