Goshen

Henry "Hank" Owen Miller, 20, of Goshen, died Thursday, December 13, 2018 in Goshen.

He was born July 8, 1998, in Goshen to Deborah Guipe Miller and Gregory Scott Miller.

He graduated from Goshen High School in 2017 and attended Ball State University.

Hank cultivated a lifelong love of music and art.  He began playing guitar at age eight and first performed solo in grade school talent shows in the third grade.

In middle school and high school, Hank played percussion for the Goshen High School Crimson Marching Band.  He also participated in jazz band, concert band, and winter percussion.  Hank was especially proud of his membership in the Goshen Percussion Ensemble.  During his time with the group, they won state championships each year from 2014 through 2017.  He looked up to and learned much from the group's director, Derrick Shannon.  Said Mr. Shannon, "Hank was the reason that the Goshen Percussion program grew so fast.  Not only did he push the talent of the group but he was also the support system for so many kids through the years."  During high school summers, as a member of Legends Drum and Bugle Corps of Kalamazoo, Michigan, Hank toured the country playing snare drum and performing in national and international competitions.

The summer after graduation, Hank marched with Phantom Regiment of Rockford, Illinois, but unfortunately had to leave early due to an injury.

Most recently, Hank marched with Legacy Indoor Percussion Ensemble of Indianapolis.  He split center snare for the group and reunited with his former instructor, Shannon, and some of his former bandmates.  The group has decided to start a scholarship in Hank's name.

Hank also enjoyed writing songs, composing music on his guitar, and was teaching himself to record and mix his compositions.  Additionally, Hank loved to draw and write in his journal.

As a youth, Hank was a very accomplished competitive swimmer. He swam several years for Goshen Swimming Inc. and placed among top swimmers in the state in the butterfly events.

Surviving Hank are his mother, Debbie; his father, Greg; his brother, Sam and his sister, Eve.

Hank was loved by many and will be deeply missed by his family and the many whose lives he touched.

A memorial service will be held May 5, 2019 at 4 p.m. at the College Mennonite Church, 1900 South Main Street.  A time of sharing and fellowship will follow the service.
