Helen L. Kauffman Henry

Helen L. Kauffman Henry, 97, passed away late Wednesday evening, July 22, 2009, at Goshen General Hospital following a very brief illness. Helen was born to Rev. John D. and Maud M. (Moyer) Frederick on September 16, 1911, in Union Township, Elkhart County, Indiana.  She married Harvey M. Kauffman on August 25, 1935, in Nappanee.  He died on April 10, 1984.  She then married Dean L. Henry on August 24, 1991.  He also preceded her in death as well as her parents. Helen grew up in Nappanee and graduated from Nappanee High School in 1929 before becoming a Goshen resident in 1936.  She earned a degree from Manchester College in 1932.  She had also taken additional classes at Goshen College.  She retired as a school teacher in 1973 having taught at old Stump Country School, third grade at Nappanee, second grade at Model School of Goshen, and kindergarten at Fairfield Schools.  She was a longtime member of Goshen City Church of the Brethren serving as deaconess and choir member.  She also was a member of Mu Sigma Eta Fine Arts Sorority, Goshen Hospital Auxiliary where she was a patient librarian, Goshen Historical Society, Elkhart County Retired Teachers’ Association, Indiana State Retired Teachers’ Association, and National Education Association.  In addition, Helen was a soloist with Lyric Choir and Home Economics Chorus, both of Goshen.  She especially loved her family, friends, and the many children she taught.  Helen enjoyed music, flowers, and travel.  She is survived by three daughters, Janice (Weldon) Reynolds of Middlebury, Sharon (John) Leedy of Georgetown, Texas, and Angela Kauffman of Granger, Indiana; two sons, Randall (Grace) Kauffman of Elkhart and Craig (Tricia) Kauffman of Bay City, Oregon; one step-daughter, Arlene (Stephen) Berkey of Thompsons Station, Tennessee; 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and one brother, Carlyle (Nita) Frederick of Goshen.    She was preceded in death by her parents; both her husbands; one sister, Mabel Schrock; and one brother, Donald Frederick.  Friends may call from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m., Sunday, July 26, and 9-10 a.m., Monday, July 27, at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home.  A 10:00 a.m., Monday, July 27, 2009, funeral service will be held at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home with Pastor Norman Replogle of West Goshen Church of the Brethren and Pastor Bev Weaver of the Goshen City Church of the Brethren officiating. Burial will be at Violett Cemetery.  Memorial contributions may be made out to Goshen City Church of the Brethren, West Goshen Church of the Brethren, or the Goshen Boys and Girls Club.
