Harvey O. Elder, 89, of Goshen, precious husband, father and grandfather, passed away Monday morning, November 10, 2014 at IU Health Goshen Hospital. He was born May 14, 1925 in Des Moines, Iowa to Harvey O. and Mabel (Reese) Elder. On January 23, 1948 he married Bonnie Sinner in Goshen. She survives along with two daughters, Susan (David) Ogle, of Goshen and Sally (Jim) Whitehead, of Elkhart; six grandchildren, Erin (Jamie) Haskett, of Carmel, Kyle (Sara) Ogle, of Goshen, Mason (Erica) Ogle, of Elkhart, Nick (Megan) Ogle, of Plymouth, Michigan, and Amy and Kim Whitehead, both of Elkhart and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents. He graduated in 1943 from Lincoln High School, Des Moines and attended International Business School, Fort Wayne. A World War II veteran, Mr. Elder served in the south Pacific with the U.S. Marine Corps as a tail gunner on a dive bomber, for which he received three air medals. He and his pilot developed a friendship that has lasted 70 years. A member of First United Methodist Church, Mr. Elder worked at Whitehall for 13 years and Goshen Rubber for 23 years, retiring in 1989. In keeping with his wishes, cremation will take place at Yoder-Culp Crematory. Friends are invited to meet at Violett Cemetery for a Friday, November 14, 2014, 10 a.m. military graveside service. A memorial service will follow at First United Methodist Church, Goshen at 11 a.m. Pastors Ed and Brenda Fritz will officiate. I n lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the church or to Goshen Care at Home Hospice.
