Harriet Lapp Burkholder, 92, of Goshen, died Thursday afternoon, September 6, 2007, at Greencroft Healthcare. She was born March 31, 1915, in Calcutta, India, to George and Esther (Ebersole) Lapp. She married J. Lawrence Burkholder in Manheim, Pennsylvania, on August 20, 1939. He survives. A 1935 graduate of Goshen College, Mrs. Burkholder was a member of the College Mennonite Church, Goshen, where she helped start College Church Neighborhood groups. She served as Goshen College’s First Lady from 1971 to 1984 and she helped start the ongoing Goshen College Afternoon Sabbatical Programs. She is survived by her husband, J. Lawrence; one son, Howard Burkholder of Boston, Massachusetts; two daughters, Myrna Burkholder of Goshen and Janet (Lauren) Friesen of Flint, Michigan; and two grandchildren, Eliot Friesen-Meyers and Erica Friesen. She was preceded in death by her parents; a stepmother, Fannie Hershey; a son, Gerald Burkholder in 1981; and two sisters, Lois Camp and Pauline Lapp. Friends will be received Saturday, September 8, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., at the Koinania Room at College Mennonite Church. A 3:00 p.m., Sunday, September 9, 2007, funeral service will be conducted at College Mennonite Church. Pastor Klaudia Smucker will officiate. A private burial will be in Elkhart Prairie Cemetery, Goshen, on Monday, September 10, 2007. Memorial contributions may be made to the J. Lawrence and Harriet Burkholder Scholarship at Goshen College.
