Harmon "Hap" Williams

April 13, 1922 — March 9, 2020

Harmon “Hap” Williams, 97, of Goshen passed away on Monday, March 9, 2020 at Courtyard Healthcare, Goshen. He was born on April 13, 1922 in Detroit, Michigan, to Ben and Carrie (Prough) Williams. His family moved to Goshen in 1932. He married Mary Lou Steele on March 25, 1950.

Survivors include daughters Susan (John) Fairless of Perrysville, Ohio, and Marla Schrader of Goshen; son Ben Williams of Goshen; son-in-law Robert Rolfs of Salt Lake City, Utah, and 5 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lou Williams, daughter Diane Rolfs, sister Margaret Kramer, and a brother, George Williams.

Hap served during World War II during the Pacific Theatre, where he was stationed at several different locations, eventually ending his tour of duty in the Palau Islands. He was a lifelong member of the American Legion, VFW and the DAV.

He worked at the Goshen News for 40 years, where he held several positions including President and General Manager. He retired in early 1987.

Mr. Williams was appointed to the Goshen Community School Board and served 8 years, from 1965-1973, including two years as president of the board. He served on the boards for ADEC, United Way and participated on the funding committees for Adult Daycare, Goshen Hospital and Greencroft. Hap also served as Elkhart County Commissioner from 1989-2000.

Mr. Williams became a charter member of Maplecrest Country Club, where he served on the board. He was also a member of the Elks and Goshen Rotary.

As an adolescent, he was a thoroughbred horse racing enthusiast, who aspired to become a professional jockey. He served a short apprenticeship at the Detroit race track until his career was cut short.  He remained a lifelong admirer of thoroughbreds. Hap was an avid bowler as well and served as the Goshen Bowling Secretary for many years.

Family and friends will meet at Violett Cemetery on Thursday, March 12, 2020 at 2 p.m. for graveside services.
