Harlan J. Engel, 70, of Goshen and formerly of Hartley, Iowa died Wednesday afternoon, September 23,2015, at South Bend Hospice House. He was born May 29, 1945 in Cherokee, Iowa to Hans and Theresa (Harms) Engel. He is survived by a daughter, Katrina (Chad Williamson) Engel of Goshen; two sons, Donald L. (Melissa) Engel of Suffolk, Virginia, and Richard S. Engel, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; nine grandchildren; and a twin brother, Harley Engel of Manitowoc, Wisconsin. Mr. Engel was a 23 year veteran of the U.S. Navy. Following his military service he worked at Freudenberg NOK, Inc. in Spencer, Iowa. He also returned to college at age 55, receiving his associate's degree from Iowa Lakes Community College in 2002. He performed high technical industrial maintenance and was a certified automotive technician. Harlan was the commander of the Everly, Iowa American Legion and president of the USS Ashland Association. Family and friends will meet Saturday, September 26, 2015, at 12:45 p.m. at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home to go in procession to Violett Cemetery for a 1 p.m. military graveside service. Memorials may be directed to the USS Ashland Association.
