Gloria Jean Byrd

Gloria J. Byrd, 64, of Elkhart, died Tuesday afternoon, July 10, 2012, at Wesley Health Care, Auburn. She was born November 11, 1947 in Smith Town, Kentucky to Thomas and Betty Z. (Morris) Griffis, Sr. She married Benjamin J. Hurt, Sr. November 1966 in Goshen. They divorced in 1982 and he later died in 1987. She is survived by a son, Benjamin J. (Debra) Hurt, Jr. of Goshen; her mother, Betty Z. Griffis of Elkhart; two grandchildren, Nicole D. (Efren) Calderon and Elizabeth R. Hurt; three great-grandchildren, Noah, Moriyah and Blake Calderon; and a brother, David R. (Deb) Griffis of Elkhart. She was preceded in death by her father, Thomas Griffis Sr., in 2008 and a brother, Thomas Griffis, Jr. in 1977. An avid "facebooker", collector of dolls, and animal lover, Gloria, enjoyed watching classic movies. A 1965 graduate of Goshen High School, she worked at Homecrest Corporation for 27 years processing orders. Friends may call from 9 to until the 11 a.m., Saturday, July 14, 2012, funeral service at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home. Rev. Michael Quirey, Grace Baptist Church, Elkhart, will officiate. Cremation will follow the service. Memorial contributions may be made to Elkhart County Humane Society.
