Gertrude Virginia (Tonge) Powell

Gertrude Virginia (Tonge) Powell, 87, of Goshen, died Friday morning, October 23, 2009, at Greencroft Healthcare.  She was born in Providence, Rhode Island, on December 21, 1921, to the late James Tonge and Vera Mae (Doeg) Austin. She Married Reverend Harold Powell on May 28, 1940, in Riverside, California. He preceded her in death on February 25, 1993.  A Goshen resident since 1999, Mrs. Powell was a piano teacher and a gifted musician. She played the piano and organ at Faith Community Church in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin during the 38 years that her husband was pastor there. She also played the piano for the residents of Greencroft during her time there.  Mrs. Powell is survived two sons, David William (Karen) Powell, Goshen, and Paul Michael (Ellen) Powell, Yakima, Washington; one daughter, Suzanne (David) Giegler, Florence, Kentucky; one sister, Ruth Marilyn Robbins, Riverside, California; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.  Friends may call from 2 to 3 p.m., Wednesday, October 28, at The Meetinghouse at Greencroft.  A 3 p.m., Wednesday, October 28, 2009, memorial service will be conducted at The Meetinghouse. Velma Swartz, Greencroft chaplain, will officiate.    A burial will follow later at the Good Shepherd Cemetery, Ocala, Florida.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Gideons.
