Gerald "Jerry" Humerickhouse

Gerald “Jerry” Ray Humerickhouse passed away Monday, Sept. 21, at his home. He was born Dec. 23, 1936, in Wilmore, Kentucky, to Guy Russell and Ethel (Trueblood) Humerickhouse. He graduated in 1955 from Mississinewa High School in Gas City, Indiana. A 1959 graduate of Indiana University, he was a high school band director for several years, then served 2 years as an assistant director of the Purdue University bands where he met Rena Marie Smith. The two were married June 4, 1967, in Indianapolis, then moved to Goshen in 1968 and lived there for 58 years. He had a long career as a principal with his most memorable years at Towncrest Junior High (now Goshen Middle School) where he continued to have summer reunions with the staff for many years..

Jerry is survived by his wife Rena, son Glenn (Laura) of Noblesville, daughter Kristina Peterson of Elkhart, grandchildren Nathan, Lily, Micah, Grant, Megan, Claire, and Caleb; brothers Doug and Lee, and several nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Dal. Jerry was an active member of Goshen First Church for over 50 years and served on church boards and taught Bible studies. He loved reading his Bible.

He loved travelling with Rena and the two visited all 7 continents and 81 countries. He enjoyed eating dark chocolate, making homemade ice cream, the Gourmet Food Club, watching IU basketball, and finally IU football! The highlight of each week was his Tuesday morning breakfast with neighbors Ray, Raymond, Marty, Jeff, and Rusty. Most importantly, Jerry was a great husband, father, and grandfather, and will be deeply missed. An imperfect man, he knew that Jesus Christ was his Savior and Redeemer and his family looks forward to the day they will see him again in the presence of God. Through his many health struggles he remained resilient, relying on his faith in God, not to heal him physically, but to give him opportunities to lead others to Christ.

Visitation will be held at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home in Goshen on Sunday, Sept. 27, from 1-5 pm. On Monday, Sept. 28 visitation will be held from 10-11 am at Goshen First Church, with the service immediately following. Burial will follow at Violett Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Bashor Children’s Home, World Missionary Press in New Paris, or Goshen First Church.
