George Nicholson

George Nicholson, 87, of Goshen, died Friday morning, March 21, 2008, at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.  He had gone into the hospital with heart problems on February 5 and surgery on February 13. He was born in Chicago, Illinois on August 10, 1920, to Chris and Angeline (Svolos) Nicholson.  He married Gracia R. Carlson on May 8, 1943 in Fort Knox, Kentucky.  She passed away on October 18, 2003. A Goshen resident since 1947, Mr. Nicholson, along with his wife, was owner and administrator of the former Nicholson Convalesce Home in Goshen until 1971.  Mr. Nicholson served in the US Army during World War II with the 778th Tank Battalion and earned a Purple Heart and a Silver Star with Valor.  He served as the battalion coordinator and historian.  He was a member of the Plymouth United Church of Christ, Goshen; the Goshen VFW Post #985; the DAV #15, the American Legion #30; and Maplecrest Country Club. He is survived by a daughter, Connie K. (Roland) Slyby of Fort Wayne; a son, Philip L. (Signe) Nicholson of Mooresville; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife; two brothers, John and Nick Nicholson; and a sister, Katherine Magramas. Friends may call 12 to 1 p.m., Saturday, March 22, at the funeral home. A 1:00 p.m. funeral service will be held at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home on Saturday, March 22, 2008.  Pastor John von Lackum of the Plymouth United Church of Christ will officiate. Burial will be in Violett Cemetery, Goshen. Memorial contributions may be made to the Plymouth United Church of Christ or Goshen VFW Post #985 or to the Donor’s Choice.
