George F. Heffner, 86, of Elkhart, died early Wednesday afternoon, June 10, 2009, at Riverside Village. He was born in Osceola, Indiana on March 30, 1923, to Fred and Marie (Frailey) Heffner. On December 25, 1942, in Goshen he married Senora I. Neff. She preceded him in death. A lifelong resident of the area, Mr. Heffner was a veteran of World War II and received a Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. He was a past commander of VFW # 985 and a member of the Elkhart DAV #19 and the American Legion of Nappanee. He volunteered at Harvest Basket and enjoyed camping, gardening and taking care of his yard. He was one of the founding owners and past president of Auspro Manufacturing Company. He is survived by a daughter, Karen Douwsma of Elkhart; a son, Randy A. Heffner of Orland, Indiana; grandchildren, Timothy Douwsma and Lori Bieganski, both of Goshen; four great-grandchildren; four sisters, Helen Pettit of Montpelier, Ohio, Carlie (James) Eldridge of Rolling Prairie, Indiana, Marcelle Moors of Elkhart and Addaline (Doyne) Parker of Nappanee; and two brothers, Curtis Heffner of Elkhart and Orville Heffner of Las Vegas, Nevada. He was preceded in death by his wife; four sisters, Pauline Meyers, Viola Laurance, Devere Cox and Carol Truex; and a brother, Kenneth Heffner. Friends may call 4 to 8 p.m., Friday, June 12, at the funeral home. A 10:00 a.m., Saturday, June 13, 2009, funeral service will be held at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home. Quartermaster John Piecuch of VFW #985 will officiate. Burial will be in Chapel Hill. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the donor’s choice.
