Frank Algate, 85, of Goshen, died Wednesday, November 17, 2010, at Elkhart General Hospital. He was born January 22, 1925 in Lansing, Mich., to William and Nellie (Gough) Algate. He married Joyce DeMond May 27, 1951 in Woodland, Mich. She survives. Also surviving are three sons, Andrew (Jean) Algate, Houston, Texas, Michael Algate, Elkhart, and Paul Algate, Bridgewater, New Jersey; and three granddaughters, Michelle, Elyse, and Helene of Houston, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, and five sisters. A WWII veteran, Frank joined the US Navy at age 18 in 1943 and served in the South Pacific. A graduate of Lansing Eastern High School, Lansing, Michigan, Frank received a bachelor of arts degree from Manchester College in 1951; a law degree from Valparaiso University in 1954; and a master’s degree in school administration from Western Michigan University. Frank was a teacher at Millersburg and Jefferson high schools and then served as Assistant Superintendent of the Wa-Nee school system. While living in Nappanee he was elected Nappanee City Judge and served from 1972 to 1976. He was with Goshen Community Schools for 23 years, serving first as Assistant Superintendent and then as Superintendent from 1976 to December 1989. After retirement he served 12 years as Elkhart County Councilman. Frank served nine years on the Goshen General Hospital Board, was a member of the county health board from 1980 to 1985, served 10 years on the board of directors of Oaklawn from 1974 to 1984, and has served on boards of the Youth Services Bureau, Junior Achievement, and the Elkhart County Traffic Safety Committee. He was a member of Goshen Rotary for 30 years, and was a member of the Goshen City Church of the Brethren. Friends may call 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., Sunday, November 21, at the funeral home. A 10:00 a.m., Monday, November 22, 2010, funeral service will be held at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home with Pastor Bev Weaver of Goshen City Church of the Brethren officiating. Burial will follow in Violett Cemetery, Goshen. Memorial contributions may be given to Goshen City Church of the Brethren or Goshen Boys and Girls Club.
