Eugene S. Weaver, 97, of Goshen, passed away March 15, 2017 at The Maples at Waterford Crossing.
Gene was born in Goshen June 24, 1919, on his mother’s birthday, to Frank M. and Hattie (Stealy) Weaver.
He graduated from Goshen High School in 1939 and from Purdue University College of Pharmacy in 1944.
Gene is survived by his daughter, Susan Weaver (Conn Sharp) of Columbus, Ohio; a son, Richard (Karen) Weaver of Goshen; six grandchildren, Cori (Robert) McGrath of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Caitlin (Vince) Rozman of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Michael Sharp of Columbus, Ohio, Nathan Weaver (Jillian Neary) of South Pasadena, California, Jeri Lyn Leitch of Goshen, Kelly (John) Ryan of Goshen; five great grandchildren; a sister Frances Taylor of Jackson, Tennessee; and many nieces and nephews.
Gene was predeceased by his wife of fifty-seven years, Marion; two sisters, Louise Swoveland and Harriette Sloan; and brothers-in-law, Laurel Swoveland, Bill Sloan and J. L. Taylor.
Gene met the love of his life and best friend Marion Beesley, while they were training in hospital pharmacy at the University of Michigan. They were married in Ann Arbor in 1948 and soon moved to Detroit where Gene worked for the AJ Meyer Pharmacy. In 1952 Gene and Marion and their two children moved to Goshen. Gene served Goshen as a pharmacist until his retirement in 1981, first at Culp Rexall Drug Store, then at the same Main and Washington location as co-owner of Stark and Weaver Drug Store with Harold Stark. He later worked and retired from Parkside Pharmacy then worked part-time at Smucker Drugs in Middlebury for several years.
In retirement, Gene pursued many endeavors, including woodcarving, wood lathe, photography and greenhouse gardening. He was a gadget guy and an early adopter of technology. He was also a science geek; and pre-Google served his children and grandchildren as their go to information source.
Gene was a long-time member of First United Methodist Church, Goshen.
Friends may call Wednesday, March 22 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home, where at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 23 a funeral service will take place. Pastor Ben Whirledge of First United Methodist Church will officiate.
Burial will follow in Violett Cemetery, Goshen.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to First United Methodist Church or Community Foundation of Elkhart County.
