Ernest E. Hartman, 96, of Goshen, died late Friday evening, November 1, 2013 at Courtyard Healthcare, where he had been a resident for a month. He was born September 1, 1917, in Kokomo, to George D. and Anna K. (Hoffman) Hartman. On June 17, 1951 he married Martha J. Groom, at Middlebury Methodist Church. She survives along with a son, Gregory, of Goshen. He was preceded in death by his parents; seven brothers; and two sisters. Mr. Hartman was an alumnus of Howard County High School, and 1939 graduate of Purdue University, where he was a member of the Beta Sigma P.S.I., and the choir. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1941, and was honorably discharged, in order to reenlist in the U.S. Naval Reserves, where he served until 1954. From 1946-1974 he owned and operated Hartman's Pharmacy in Elkhart. He continued to work as a pharmacist for Hooks-Revco until his retirement. He was a member of the American Legion, Goshen Post 30; and the Lutheran Laymans League. Visitation will be one hour prior to the 1 p.m. Tuesday, November 5, 2013, funeral service at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Goshen. The Reverends Robert J. Schallhorn, Spencer Mielke, and Mel Meyer will officiate. Entombment will take place at Rice Cemetery with military honors provided by the Goshen Honor Guard. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Trinity Memorial Endowment Fund, or the Lutheran Worship for shut-ins.
