Elvina N. Martens, 86, of Goshen, died Wednesday, April 11, 2012, at Greencroft Healthcare following a stroke on April 5. She was born February 11, 1926 in Chicago, Illinois, to the late John T. and Catherine (Wiens) Neufeld. She married Rudolph C. Martens December 28, 1951 in Chicago. He survives along with two sons, John (Danile) Martens of Mishawaka, and Philip (Janet Liechty) Martens of Champaign, Illinois; a daughter, Elizabeth (Cleon) Claassen of Moses Lake, Washington; six grandchildren; a great-grandchild; a sister, Edith (Steve) Michelovic of Philadelphia, Missssippi; and a brother, Ernest (Lila Penner) Neufeld og Mountain Lake, Minnesota. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Esther Kressly and Helen Coon. Elvina graduated from the University of Illinois Medical School in 1950. She served as a missionary doctor in the Democratic Republic of the Congo for 18 years. After retiring from the mission field she practiced medicine in Illinois and Indiana. She was a member of the Silverwood Mennonite Church and the Mennonite Medical Association. Friends may call 2 to 4:30 p.m., Sunday, April 15, at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home. A 4:00 p.m. Monday, April 16, 2012, memorial service will be conducted at Silverwood Mennonite Church, Goshen. Pastor Ron Guengerich will officiate. Memorial contributions may be made to AIMM - Africa InterMennonite Mission.
