Elmer Raymond “Ray” Matson died Friday night, January 15, 2010, at Miller’s Merry Manor, New Carlisle. He was a former resident of Elkhart. He was born on October 18, 1912, to the late William Foster and Mable V. (Swigert) Matson in Montpelier, Indiana. He married Irma I. Wagner on December 20, 1941, at the Sunnymeade Church of God in South Bend. She survives. Mr. Matson taught school in Montpelier, Pendleton, and in the Elkhart Community Schools where he retired from. He was a graduate of both Anderson College and Ball State University. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942-1945, attended South Side Church of God, and was a member of the First Church of God, Elkhart. He is survived by two daughters, Rae Jeaniene Matson, South Bend, Sheryl M. Fields, Lake Ann, Michigan; one sister, Ruth Geiger, Angola; two grandsons, Jeremy Fields, Lake Ann, Michigan, Kevin (Amy) Fields, Middlebury; and one great-granddaughter, Laira Fields, Lake Ann, Michigan. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Clysto Lloyd, Faye Robinson, and Catherine Tait. Friends may call from 11-1 p.m., Monday, January 18, 2010, at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home at 1 p.m., Monday, January 18, at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home, Rev. Greg Crump is officiating. Burial will be in Violett Cemetery, Goshen.
