Edward Garcia, 75, of Goshen, died Thursday, January 3, 2019, at home.
He was born March 26, 1943 in Malakoff, Texas to Jesse and Manuela (Felán) Garcia.
On August 14, 1971 he married Peggy Troyer at East Goshen Mennonite Church.
She survives along with two daughters, Gretchen (Luke) Morningstar and Alison Romero, both of Goshen; four grandchildren, Nadia and Ben Romero and Jake and Zach Morningstar; and two brothers, Frank (Nancy) Garcia of Buna, Texas and Paul (Beth) Garcia of Columbus, Georgia,
He was preceded in death by his parents, step-mother, Theresa Solis and four brothers, Rudy, Jim, Jesse and Ben Garcia.
A father figure to many, Mr. Garcia taught 5 th grade for years at Model Elementary in Goshen. He was an active member of Harvest Community Church, serving as their first elder. He was part of the leadership of Celebrate Recovery at Harvest Community Church. He participated in taking the program to Work Release for nine years and then volunteered as a jail chaplain in Elkhart County Jail.
Ed was an avid gardener and loved to work outside. He loved to read and travel. He also loved attending his children and grandchildren’s activities.
Visitation will be Wednesday, January 9, 2019, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. and one hour prior to the Thursday, 10 a.m., funeral service at Harvest Community Church, 17285 C.R. 34, Goshen. Pastors Jim Dreier and Steve Chupp and Jared Yoder, Celebrate Recovery ministry leader, will officiate.
Cremation will follow the service.
Memorial contributions may be given to Elkhart County Jail Chaplaincy Program.
