Edna P. Shantz

Edna P. Shantz, 94, of Goshen, died early Sunday morning, November 12, 2006, at Goshen General Hospital Emergency Room.   She was born May 2, 1912, in Oscoda County, Michigan, to Annanias and Ana (Steckle) Shantz.  A resident of the area since the early 1950’s, Miss Shantz retired in 1982 from Goshen college where she taught in the Family and Consumer Sciences Department.    A member of the College Mennonite Church, Miss Shantz taught at Eastern Mennonite High School in Harrisonburg, Virginia from 1948-1950.  She received her undergraduate degree from Eastern Mennonite University and her master’s degree from the University of Minnesota.   She volunteered in the College Mennonite Church office, for The Window in the crafts corner, and Mennonite Central Committee.  She designed wall hangings, wedding dresses and taught weaving class to keep people interest in the art and to work the great looms.   Miss Shantz is survived by a brother, Clifford Shantz of Goshen and 29 nieces and nephews.   She was preceded in death by three brothers, Ivan, Melvin and Ernie Shantz; and three sisters, Ada Handrich, Alma Bontrager and Emma Yoder.   Friends will be received 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, November 14 in the Koinania Room at the College Mennonite Church.   A funeral service will be conducted on Wednesday, November 15, 2006, in the Koinania Room at 11:00 a.m., at College Mennonite Church.  Pastors Firman Gingerich and Rosemary Widmer will officiate.   Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Fairview, Michigan, at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 16, 2006.   Memorial contributions may be made to The Window.
