Douglas D. Winter, Sr., 66, of South Bend, died Monday afternoon, May 30, 2011, at Memorial Hospital. He had been in failing health for four years. He was born May 29, 1945 in Goshen to the late George W. and Mandilla M. (Chapman) Winter. On October 9, 1965, he married Donna Louise Scheck. She survives with two sons, Douglas (Ann Marie Swigart) Winter and Robert (Kimberly Jasmine Geary) Winter, both of South Bend; five grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild; a brother, Dean Winter of Mishawaka; two sisters, Barbara M. (Farrington) Sampson of Delphos, Ohio, and Patricia S. (Winter) Cannon of South Bend. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Michelle Lynn Winter, August 17, 1967 and a brother, Michael E. Winter, December 27, 1940. A retired taxi cab driver, Mr. Winter loved to spend time with his grandkids. He was an avid story teller and NASCAR and Harley-Davidson fan. He often gave free cab rides to Notre Dame College students. He was a father figure to everyone he met. Friends may call 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 2, at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home, Goshen. A 1:30 p.m. Friday, June 3, 2011, funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home. Burial will be in Oakridge Cemetery, Goshen. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph County Hospice, Riley's Hospital or donor's choice.
