Douglas Allan Johnston, 44, of Goshen, died early Thursday morning, December 15, 2011, at Greencroft Healthcare after a two year battle with cancer. He was born August 2, 1967 in Goshen. He married Jeannine Windbigler June 23, 1990 in Elkhart at Hillcrest United Methodist Church. She survives. Doug was a devoted father to his three children, Jessica, Alexis and Cole Johnston, all at home; his mother and step-father, Kathryn and Kare Andersen of Syracuse; grandfather, Lamar (Peg) Paflas of Goshen; four siblings, Scott Johnston of Syracuse, Kare (Casey) Andersen of Goshen, Stein Andersen of Elgin, Illinois and Hege (Ernie) Szabo of Richmond, Illinois. A member of First United Methodist Church, Goshen, Doug was a community leader and a community servant. He served on the Boys and Girls Club Corporate Board; and on the boards of United Way of Elkhart County, Greencroft, Loveway and CAPS. He had been a member of the Goshen Noon Kiwanis Club, Maplecrest and Elcona Country Clubs. Doug graduated from Elkhart Memorial High School in 1986, Notre Dame University in 1990 and earned his MBA from Indiana University South Bend. He founded Indiana Community Bank, Goshen in 2000 and served as its president and CEO. A lover of Beatles music, he sang with the Notre Dame Glee Club and was an avid Notre Dame football fan. Doug's wishes were to be cremated. His family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., Saturday, but the doors will be open by noon at the First United Methodist Church Life Center for those who would like to sign the register book or leave a memorial donation. A 4 p.m., Sunday, memorial service will be conducted at the Life Center, 1212 W. Plymouth Ave., Goshen. Pastors Ed and Brenda Fritz will officiate. Doug's personal relationship and assurance of his salvation through Jesus Christ was lived out daily in his faithfulness and service at Goshen First United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Doug Johnston Children's Fund at Indiana Community Bank, Goshen.
