Douglas A. Brookins, 56, died Thursday morning, January 21, 2010, at Rivercrest Specialty Hospital, Mishawaka, where he was admitted on January 13, 2010. He had been ill since September 22, 2009. He was born on February 1, 1953, to the late Wilbur and Fern (Yoder) Brookins, in Goshen. He married Barbra Phillips on June 22, 1975, they divorced, and he is survived by a special friend Lorre Osborn. Mr. Brookins was a 1971 graduate of Fairfield High School and a 1975 graduate of Creighton University, Omaha, Nebraska, where he played basketball. He belonged to the Maple Grove Church of the Brethren, a member of the New Paris Telephone board, and an advocate for the Pork Industry. He worked in sales for ADM Alliance Nutrition since 2004, and he also currently owned Progressive Pork Concepts. He is survived by one son, Gavin (Natalie) Brookins, Cutler, Indiana; two brothers, Ronald (Barbara) Brookins, New Paris, Richard (Julia) Brookins, Goshen; and two grandchildren, Pierce and Preston. Friends may call from 2-5 and 6-8 p.m., Monday, January 25, at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home, and from 9-10 a.m., Tuesday, January 26, at Maple Grove Church of the Brethren. A 10 a.m., Tuesday, January 26, 2010 funeral service will be held at Maple Grove Church of the Brethren. Pastor Dwayne Runkle will be officiating. Burial will be in Whitehead Cemetery, New Paris. Memorials may be made in lieu of flowers to the Douglas Brookins Memorial Fund, which will be used to benefit Maple Grove Church of the Brethren, Creighton University, and other institutions Doug supported.
