Dorothy G. Sherman, 97 of Goshen died at 12:03 am Sunday, October 21, 2012 at Greencroft Healthcare. She was born October 2, 1915, in Goshen to Harley and Dora (Anglemyer) Shank. On June 19, 1937, she married Gerald V. Sherman in Goshen. He died December 6, 1999. Surviving are a daughter, Nancy Ash, Michigan City; Nancy's fiancé, Melvin Vranicar of Fort Myers Beach, Florida; two sons, Roger (Jeanne) Sherman, Cicero, and John Sherman, Eldorado, Kan.; four grandchildren; seven great grandchildren. Preceding Dorothy in death are her parents; two sisters; Verna Bushong and Edith Hunter; two brothers, Donald and Claude Shank and a son-in-law Verne Ash. Dorothy was baptized on Sunday June 23, 1929, along with her two older brothers Donald and Claude, her sister Verna and nine other persons in the Elkhart river just west of Waterford, at the west edge of the bridge. She has been a member of the West Goshen Church of the Brethren since March 20, 1933, where she was a lifetime deacon and was active in many, many areas over the years. Dorothy was a cook at Goshen High School cafeteria and was the manager and dietitian at Towncrest Junior High School for many years, from which she retired in 1978. She was a 1933 graduate of Goshen High School. Dorothy had a great love for cooking, crafts, quilting, crocheting, knitting and sewing. She created and made many afghans and quilted bedspreads for her family and grandchildren. Dorothy crafted and sewed a complete wardrobe for her granddaughter's Barbies. She also had a great love for poetry and often wrote poems for church activities. One of her favorite poems was Longfellow's A Psalm of Life, which she quoted from memory for members of her family just a little over a week and a half ago. She published a cookbook in 1983 which still enjoys an active following. Friends may call from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home on Thursday, 10/25/12 and during the hour prior to the 10:00 a.m. funeral service on Friday, 10/26/12 at West Goshen Church of the Brethren. Pastor Norman L. Replogle will officiate. Burial will follow at West Goshen Cemetery. Memorials may be made to West Goshen Church of the Brethren, or Goshen Home Care & Hospice.
