Doris G. Metzler, 97, died February 5, 2025 at her residence at Greencroft Healthcare, Goshen, Indiana. Doris Evelyn Gunden was born on Aug. 29, 1927, in Flanagan, IL to C.J. and Agnes (Albrecht) Gunden, the eighth of nine children. At a young age the family moved to Goshen, IN where her younger sister Ruth was born.
On June 6, 1953, she married Carl M. Metzler in Goshen, IN. The two got to know each other while in voluntary service on the Navajo Reservation in New Mexico. Carl preceded her in death on July 3, 2022
Doris is survived by her children, Jane Metzler of Goshen, IN, Robert (Cathy) of Marietta, GA, and Linda Metzler (Chris Gill) of Berrien Springs, MI. She is grandmother to Ryan (Jessica), Sara (Rich), Martina (John), Joshua (Erin), and great-granny to John, Theodore, and Sophia.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents, C.J. and Agnes; her siblings and their spouses, Elva (Wilber), Lois (Ernest), Orville (Ann), Cleland (Myra), Elton (Marjorie),
Ralph (Opal), Donald (Elsie), and Ruth.
Doris taught school for several years in Indiana and Virginia. After her children were in school, she returned to school and received a master’s in library science from
Western Michigan University.
While living in Kalamazoo, MI, she worked as a librarian within the public library system. She was active in the Church and Synagogue Library Association (CSLA) and Church
Women United. She was involved with International Student Wives at Western Michigan University and recorded text books onto tape for visually impaired students.
She was a long-time member of Skyridge Church of the Brethren and started and maintained their church library for many years.
While living in Goshen she worked at Provident Bookstore and authored a newsletter for church librarians. She also organized libraries in the community: Oaklawn, Goshen, IN; the Mennonite offices, Elkhart, IN; and Juniper Place, Goshen, IN. As a member of College Mennonite Church, she was actively involved with the church library.
Her friends and family will remember her as a gentle, loving, caring, forgiving wife, mother, grandmother, great-granny and friend.
Memorial Service will take place on Saturday, February 15, 2025 at 10:30am in the Alta & A.J. Metzler Meeting House at Greencroft Healthcare, 1225 Greencroft Drive, Goshen, IN. Visitation with family will be from 9:30-10:30 at the Meeting House.
Memorial donations may be made to MCC education fund, PO Box 500, Akron, PA 17501-0500.
