Donald M. Hurtt, Sr., 62, of Elkhart, died of natural causes on Tuesday, July 7, 2009. He was born in Brooksville, Mississippi, on January 17, 1947, to the late Lavell (Gazaway) Hurtt Shank. A longtime resident of the area, Mr. Hurtt graduated from Goshen High School in 1966 and from the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy in 1977. He served in the US Air Force in Thailand and Japan until he was discharged in September 1972. He had worked for the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department for four years and in quality control at Dexter Axle for six years. He is survived by his step-father, Lloyd Shank of Goshen; two sons, Donald M. (Andi) Hurtt, II of Elkhart, and Marcus W. (Sara) Hurtt of Mishawaka; eight grandchildren, and a brother, Tommy (Mary) Hurtt of Macon, Mississippi. He was preceded in death by his mother in December 2003. Friends may call 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, July 14, and one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the funeral Home. A 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 15, 2009, funeral service will be conducted at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home. Pastor Lenny Krebs of the Benton Free Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Violett Cemetery, Goshen.
