Dewayne Joseph Johns, 91, of Goshen, died late Thursday afternoon, January 18, 2007, at Greencroft Healthcare. He was born February 28, 1915, in Goshen, Indiana, to Ray O. and Fannie (Byler) Johns. On June 5, 1938, he married Gladys Yoder at Maple Grove Mennonite Church in Topeka, Indiana. She survives. A 1933 graduate of Topeka High School, Mr. Johns owned and operated Johns Jet-Crete in New Paris from 1946 to 1967. He had also farmed in his early adult life. He was a member of the College Mennonite Church where he served as business manager for six years. He was a charter member of Maplecrest Country Club. Mr. Johns started Man to Man, the forerunner to LaCasa. An avid biker, Mr. Johns biked thousands of miles in the Midwest, Florida, New England, Europe and Ireland. He was also involved with Outspokin’, a biking ministry. In the 1960’s he spent six weeks in Haiti building houses. He sang for many years with the Menno Singers. He enjoyed golf, volleyball and Indiana University basketball. He winter for 32 years in Sarasota, Florida where he was active in the Bahia Vista Mennonite Church. He is survived by his wife, Gladys; two daughters, Joan (Merle) Mullet of Goshen, and Bonnie (Bob Hodge) Johns of Staunton, Virginia; a son, John (Carolyn Gingerich) Johns of Albuquerque, New Mexico; six grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Janice Stanley in 1992, a grandson, Mark Mullet in 1986 and a brother, Ward Johns. Friends will be received 1 to 5 p.m., Sunday, January 21, at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home. A 9:30 a.m., prayer service will be held at the funeral home on Monday, January 22, 2007, followed by burial in Violett Cemetery, Goshen. An 11:00 a.m., memorial service will be held at College Mennonite Church, Goshen. Rev. Firman Gingerich and Rev. Klaudia Smucker will officiate. Memorial contributions may be made to LaCasa or Goshen College Community School of the Arts Acorn Project.
