Devon J. “Slugger” Bontrager, 86, of Goshen died Friday, June 14, 2024 at Waterford Crossing Healthcare.
He was born January 20, 1938 in Goshen to Arthur and Ida (Knepp) Bontrager.
On June 25, 1961 he married Esther J. Yoder in Goshen. She died May 16, 2023.
Survivors include a daughter, Debra (Doug) Bobeck of Millersburg; a son Donald (Cindy) Bontrager of Goshen; six grandchildren, Ashley (Evan) Wible, Camden (Bailey Showalter) Bontrager, Jade (Mitchell) Mattson, Morgan (Dustin) Stutzman, Shelby Bontrager and MacKenzie (Connor) Bontrager; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Arline Bontrager,Goshen, and Joan Yoder, Goshen; sisters-in-law, Kathleen Bontrager, Goshen and Clara Bontrager, Carmel; and a brother, Mervin Bontrager, Goshen.
Along with his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by brothers, Donald, Hubert and Glenn Bontrager.
Mr. Bontrager was a farmer and member of First Church of God, Goshen. He was well known for his delicious BBQ chicken and sweet corn. Devon enjoyed spending time with his family; when he wasn’t with them, he could be found “camping” at the local Moose Lodge. He and Esther enjoyed many vacations in Siesta Key, Florida.
Visitation will be Monday, June 17, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home and Tuesday beginning at 9 a.m. prior to the 10 a.m. funeral service at the funeral home. Pastor Craig Garber will officiate.
Burial will follow at Miller 8 Square Cemetery, Goshen.
