David James Milbourn, 95, of Goshen, died Wednesday evening, March 11, 2009, at his home. He was born on November 1, 1913, in South Milford in LaGrange County, Indiana., to John and Lizzie (North) Milbourn. He married Jeanne Kurtz in 1937 in Albion. She died in 1949. He then married Marjorie Rhinehart in Goshen in 1952. She died in 1994. In 1998 he married Joan Shelton in Goshen. She survives. Mr. Milbourn was a detective sergeant with the Indiana State Police from 1937-1958. He was recently honored as the oldest living Indiana State policeman. After leaving the police force he was personnel manager for NIBCO in Elkhart. A graduate of Kendallville High School and the Indiana State Police Academy, Mr. Milbourn was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Goshen and Maplecrest Country Club. He was a Past Exalted Ruler of the Goshen Elks Lodge #798. He is survived by his wife, Joan; two daughters, Linda (Stuart) Baron of Long Beach, California, and Melissa (Joseph) Motola of Pine, Arizona; one step-son, Thomas (Barbara) Shelton of Valparaiso; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Marthie McAleese of Phoenix, Arizona. He was preceded in death by two wives; a daughter, Carmen Fraser; a step-daughter, Carol Rhinehart; a step-son, Rex Rhinehart; and five sisters. Friends may call 2 to 4 p.m., and 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, March 13, at the funeral home. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, March 14, 2009, at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home. Rev. Alan Griffin of First Presbyterian Church will officiate. Burial of cremated remains will be in Violett Cemetery, Goshen. Memorial contributions may be given to First Presbyterian Church or Elkhart County Humane Society or Goshen Care at Home Hospice.
