David L. Hartzler

David L. Hartzler, 79, of Tarpon Springs, Florida, died from complications of Parkinson's Disease on Monday, Aug. 3 at Advent Health Hospital, Tarpon Springs.

He was born April 7, 1941 in Goshen to Donavon (Don) Hartzler and Ellen (VanderReyden) Hartzler.

David is survived by his loving brother, Philip C. (Jane) Hartzler of Pooler, Georgia; a nephew, Andrew (Marissa) Hartzler of Durham, North Carolina; a niece, Sarah (Nicholas) (Hartzler) Manis of Allison Park, Pennsylvania and three grand nephews, Jackson Hartzler, Jordan Manis and Zachary Manis.

David graduated from Goshen High School in 1959, where he was very involved in the music program.  He was a drum major in the Goshen band that went to the Rose Bowl Parade and the Miss America pageant.  He also sang with the Crimsonaires choir. In 1963 he earned a bachelor’s degree from Western Michigan where he was also a band drum major.  David went on to earn a master’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Southern California in 1965.

He was honorably discharged as a Sergeant from the U.S. Army in 1969 after serving three years in Germany.  After his active service, he served in the U.S. Army Reserves for an additional three years.

After his active military service he worked in the business office for 14 years at Excel Rubber Company in Goshen, which was owned by his father, Don, and his uncle, Calvin VanderReyden.

He lived in Tucson, Arizona for 27 years where he sold real estate.  Upon retiring in 2010, Dave moved to New Port Richey, Florida.

Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 12, and on Thursday, Aug. 13, one hour prior to the 11 a.m., funeral service at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home.  Burial will follow in Elkhart Prairie Cemetery, Goshen.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, www.michaeljfox.org .
