David Frederick Blough

June 20, 1951 — March 7, 2016

David Frederick Blough was born in Goshen on June 20, 1951 to Dorothy and Duane Blough. He lost his life in a farm accident on Monday, March 7, 2016. David graduated from Jefferson High School in 1969 and attended Goshen College for two years. After transferring to Purdue University, he graduated with honors in 1973 in the School of Animal Science. As a member of the Purdue Collegiate Dairy Judging Team in 1972, he received top10 recognition in each of the national contests.

David was a lifelong dairyman operating Woodsbrook Farms with his parents and, later, with his wife and children. On July 7, 1973, he married Michelle Bullard. She survives along with his two sisters; Trudy (Rick) Racine of Ozawkie, Kansas; and Dr. Jan (J.C.) Haynes of Cleveland, Mississippi; a daughter, Dr. Emilie Blough; a son, Craig Blough (fiancé Jessica Herschberger) all of Goshen, and Cara (Derek) and Joel Brovont and four granddaughters of West Lafayette. Also surviving are his aunt Shirley Hall, uncle John Shoup (Margaret), three nieces, two nephews and their families, as well as cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, infant brother Craig Thomas, Aunt Janice Robinson, Aunt and Uncle Marjorie and Hugh Woosley, Aunt Marian Blough Krebs and his son, Derek F. Blough.

David served on the Farm Bureau, Inc. Board of Directors. He was a lifelong member of Goshen City Church of the Brethren; 40 year member of Elkhart County Dairy Advisory Board; Jefferson Township Advisory Board; National Dairy Shrine; Indiana Holstein Association and the national breed associations for Guernsey, Ayrshire, Holstein, Brown Swiss, Jersey, Milking Shorthorn, and Angus Association. He was on the list of Accredited Judges for the National Holstein Association, USA.

Previously, David served as a 4-H leader for the Elkhart County Dairy Club for 20 years and influenced many dairy farmers and professionals throughout his tenure as an advisor. He served as a 4-H Adult Leader President, a member of 4-H Corporation, and of the 4-H Expansion and Review Committee. He and Michelle coached Indiana Agricultural Quiz Bowl teams and Holstein Association, Ayrshire Association and Guernsey Association National Quiz Bowl teams for 20 years.

David was a problem solver and knowledgeable about farming, the dairy industry and just about any other topic. “Uncle Dave” was always guaranteed to provide an interesting conversation. He had an uncanny ability to remember details about any animal, person or circumstance and his photographic ability to remember dairy animals of all breeds and their pedigrees was unparalleled. Most of all, David enjoyed people, interesting details and great cattle. David was truly a one of a kind individual and will be missed by his family and all who have known him throughout life.
