Daniel “Dan” Lee Cunningham, 67, lost his battle with pancreatic cancer and passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 13, 2022, in South Bend, surrounded by his loved ones.
Dan was born on January 3, 1955, in Goshen, to Thomas and Rosemary (Hoke) Cunningham. He was a lifelong resident of Goshen, minus his service in the Army where he was stationed in Germany from 1976-1978.
A 1973 graduate of Goshen High School, he served in the U.S. Army, 555
th
and 164th Military Police Companies, from 1975-1978. After his honorable discharge, he began a career driving semi-trucks, in the food service industry where he remained until he retired in 2021. Dan also worked in the produce department at the Walmart Supercenter, in Goshen, for almost 25 years. Dan never met a stranger and if you knew him, you loved him! He was kind, generous, and engaging with everyone he met.
An extremely hard worker who had great relationships with all his customers, he was a hard man to forget. He enjoyed his jobs because of his love of being around and meeting new people. He was a busybody who enjoyed being outside the home, anywhere he could interact with people. Reading, stamps, coins, vintage glassware, thrifting, horticulture, CandyCrush, SciFi, war, and history were among his many interests.
Dan was married to the mother of his daughters and stepchildren, for 41 years. He lived his life for his children and grandchildren, as they meant everything to him. There wasn’t anything Dan wouldn’t have done for those he loved. The last year of his life he was cared for by his daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren, through his battle with cancer. The beloved father and papa leaves behind his daughters Danielle (Travis) McDougal, South Bend, and Sara Cunningham, Goshen; grandchildren Reagan Cagle, Grant Horton, and Monroe McDougal, all of South Bend. Dan also leaves behind three siblings, Robert “Bob” (Deb) Cunningham, Wakarusa, Lucinda “Cindy” (Mike) Philley, Goshen, Randall “Randy” Cunningham, Columbia City. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas (1988) and Rosemary (2012).
Visitation will be Thursday, Nov. 17, from 2 to 4 and 5 to 7 p.m. and Friday from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral service at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home. Dan’s brother-in-law, Mike Philley, will officiate.
Burial, with military honors, will follow at West Goshen Cemetery.
While flowers are welcome, the family asks for everyone to pick a plant, flower, or herb to plant and flourish, in remembrance of Dan and his love for horticulture.
