Damon Lee Howell, 64, of Goshen, died Saturday, September 23, 2017, at Goshen Hospital.
He was born April 11, 1953 in Watseka, Illinois to Arthur and Thelma (Warrick) Howell.
He grew up in Morocco, Indiana, graduating from North Newton High School in 1971. He attended Huntington College for one year and then transferred to Manchester College where in 1981 he received a bachelor’s of science degree in music education. In 1983 he relocated to Goshen where he received a minor in U.S. History from Goshen College while working there as a custodian.
Beginning in 1989, and for the last 28 years, he worked as an optician in Elkhart, first for C&B Optical and then for Ossip Optometry and Ophthalmology. Damon’s interests and hobbies included singing, playing the guitar and piano, genealogy, antiquing, collecting postcards and reading about the American Civil War, especially Gettysburg. He would return several weekends during the year to the home place in Morocco to visit his sister, to work on the four acre home place, and to research Newton County history.
He accepted Jesus Christ as his personal savior at the age of 21 at a Navigator Conference, Champaign, Illinois. He worshipped at LifePoint Church, Goshen, for many years and at Fellowship of Living Hope, Rensselaer while back in Morocco.
Surviving is a sister, Donna Howell, Morocco.
Friends may call Thursday, Sept. 28, from 4 until the 6 p.m. (EST) funeral service at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home. Pastors Ed Bontreger, Troy Scott and George Bates will officiate.
Burial will be Friday, September 29, 2017, at 2 p.m. (EST) in Oakland Cemetery, Morocco, Indiana.
Memorials may be given to a charity of the donor’s choice.
